Why Good Work?

Why Good Work?

Good work for ourselves sake.

When the work is done at night or where no one sees, why good work?

This is the question of the day or night when your business activity is primarily working evening and night hours.

Cleaning carpet when no one is about or cares. Pressure washing the entry and sidewalk during the night, having more fun with the power sprayer than getting the last gum splot removed.

Why good work?

We talk about work quality at our company meetings, as we sit around the board room table and translate from Spanish to English.

My personal belief is that work, outstanding work, and doing the best I can, leave me happier with myself. Can I get better? Sure, probably, most likely, but for right now, this is the best for me.

This personal belief is not shared by everyone. But, I mean, what’s wrong with doing what it takes to get by, fewer steps, maybe.

In a word: Commitment. To oneself most of all.

Last week an electrician did some work in my home. A few simple light dimmers in the dining and kitchen. I was okay with a minor glitch. He was not. As he said, “no, this has to be perfect,” he continued to make it perfect.

He is an excellent example of commitment to oneself, which is why his workmanship is in high demand.

Is our commitment to good work front and center? Who cares?

We, us, you and me.
