Listening to table talk next to me at a coffee shop I hear what are referred to as professional people and they are being defined in one word DULL. That got me thinking about who fits in their professional people category. Is it me???
After doing a bit of research I found that there are similar industries referred to as professional. At the top is finance, then corporate, then anyone with a fancy office. Well, that then includes me, my office is awesome! Another definition: whoever must wear a suit to work. I would argue in today’s work-at-home status suits might not be required and then there are the jeans and white shirts, would they fit in as professional wear?
All this to say, I believe professional may be up to the speakers’ definition. For purposes of this writing, I will define professional people as people who work in finance, insurance, corporate, and must wear a suit or high-end professional garments when working or meeting a client. And one more defining point, these professionals attend gatherings and eat breakfast, lunch or dinner served on linen table coverings.
Since we are not interacting in person all that often in our professional lives, surely not much hugging and shaking hands happening, I hit a snag when thinking of another opportunity to reach and meet and connect with more professionals. People I want to meet and would if we were at a networking function or awards dinner.
Taking a survey of my interactions I saw the way I like connecting is by reading honest words on a post, possibly on Instagram or in an email. The posts I receive that catch my eye are sunny and touching. Short stories that draw me into the message and the messenger.
The light bulb went on and I didn’t see a DULL person in my sights. Since much of my past professional writing was about using popular words, buzz words that people thought were with it which reminds me of high school and who was in the in-group and who was not. I brushed all that aside and now strive to write emails and posts that are welcoming, honest, generous, and inviting.
As for Professional People being labeled DULL…nope, nada……
